| 7:16 p.m., 01.01.04 Nous and I barged our way down to the middle of Federation Square last night to see the "electrifying" surprise the city had lned up for NYE 2004. I'd heard on the news that Melbourne was planning to have a new tradition, something spectacular and surprising as well as the fireworks show. Something for the city to be known by on New Year's Eve. So we listened to Cat Empire until it came close to midnight, which wasn't so bad, and then Pete Smith unveiled the surprise... Four knobs on the roof of one of the buildings playing Auld Lang Syne on bagpipes with a red flare smoking away under their kilts. That's fucked. Is that the best this city can do? What's worse, there's nothing remotely Aussie about it. At least, on our way home, we saw a barbie-doll chick with pneumatic boobs to perve on. May you all break your resolutions cheerfully and without guilt. Happy new year. |
