| 1:06 p.m., 30.09.04 So I went walking yesterday lunchtime with our creative director (graphic designer) around Chapel Street, which is pretty close to work. He took me down to see the new skate bowl down near Commercial and Chapel, because a mate of his had designed it. It's bloody enormous. An 18 foot high halfpipe. 18 foot. Nearly twice the height of a basketball ring. You look at this thing and you can just feel the pain. What was more amusing though, was hearing my buddy chatting with his old skater mates, in particular his old skating sidekick. That scene completely died in the 90's, and has been revived thanks to the "extreme games" movement of relatively recent years. But listening to a 35 year old with a backwards baseball cap on and baggy skater jeans on saying things like "yeah man, this bowl is pretty gnarly. It's semi-mellow," and "you should get down here and grind a fakey sometime" nearly made me laugh out loud. My loss. Apparently this guy beat Tony Hawk in a competition a couple of years ago. |
